Prayer Thought: (excerpt from book, Page 1)
At the beginning of a new year, we most often think about setting some goals, or as some call them new years' resolutions.
Psalm 91 is one of the most encouraging ones in all of scripture. In verse one it uses the name, the Almighty for God's name and it means, I am the all sufficient one.
When setting your goals for the coming year, remember to include some of the promises of God, which are in this wonderful Psalm.
Determine to live your life in the secret place of the most high and under the shadow of the Almighty. Decide each day that He is your refuge and your fortress, and you will trust in Him.
Determine that His truth will be your place of security. Decide in your heart that you don't have to be afraid of the terror by day or the terror by night
"He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty. 'Because he loves me,' says the Lord, 'I will rescue him; I will protect him, for he acknowledges my name'" Psalm 91:1 & 14 NIV
Prayer Thought "Love Must Grow"
Paul writes to the church at Philippi that his prayer for them is that their love will abound more and more in knowledge and insight. This is for us today, also. To abound in love means that it becomes more a part of us. That it shows up in our actions and reactions.
Love must keep on growing, because we never fully mature in love. Growing means that every time we learn something, we are to bring it into our mind and add it to what we already know.
Life is a classroom and the growth of knowledge takes place by love. What you learn must be filtered through the Word of God.
All this to say that Christian Love will make the best decisions for us. This kind is not silly, immature love, but the love of Christ flowing through us.
In your prayer time, ask God to help you be more aware of His love and the need to grow more mature in His love. Practice makes one more loving.
"And this is my prayer: that your love may abound more and more in knowledge and depth of insight, so that you may be able to discern what is best and may be pure and blameless until the day of Christ". Philippians 1:9-10 NIV
About the Author:
I have been a Christian for more than fifty years. My husband Dell and I have two sons, grandchildren and great grandchildren. I have been a widow since 1991. The company Dell worked for transferred us from our home in Birmingham, AL, to Cincinnati, OH; to Youngstown, OH; to Richmond, VA; and to Strongsville, OH. Have lived in Ohio since 1976.
I have been a Sunday School Teacher, Vacation Bible School Teacher, Women's Ministry Leader, and Prayer Chairman for the church, to name a few.
When I was Prayer Chairman, in the early 1990's, I put a short prayer thought on the back of the Sunday bulletin.
Now about twelve years later, I decided to make each prayer thought a little longer and put them into a Prayer Journal.
It has been a joy to do this, and I have felt that God was encouraging me
every step of the way. Only God knows how much I have matured while
writing the prayer thoughts.
